Out of curiosity

Does anybody know of any websites written by or about people who grew up in Amway households? Something about the family going on vacations to Ada, Michigan to see the Amway facilities or to the Nutrilite plant (whose location I'm forgetting)? Kids growing up knowing how to deliver the circles presentations and able to spout forth all the reasons why Amway is superior to all those other silly companies people compare it to? Going to summer camps run by Amway Crown Directs? Singing along with LPs and tapes of the Sanborn Singers? Hanging around patiently in Amway conventions convinced you'll soon be motivated enough to sell lots of products and become a Crown yourself when you turn eighteen?

I have a feeling such a website should exist, but I don't want to be the one to write it.

The mere THOUGHT of it terrifies me.

Oh, come on, aren't you interested in a business opportunity? Dare to live your dreams!

Um, yeah. They had different standards for child abuse back in those days, you see...

I remember thinking it was pretty neat to see all the alfalfa they grew for use in the vitamins.

Yeah, I know you're not kidding. Anytime I've tried looking for a web page like the one I'm thinking should exist, I run across a bunch of sites talking about escaping from the evil capitalist mind control (or something like that). While it sounds like some of the wealthier types got that way through less-than-wonderful means, I suspect that Amway as a whole is really significantly less evil than high school.

Darn. I was hoping you were launching [profile] amwayorphan

Oh, but I wasn't an orphan! If anything, I was scarily involved. I liked going to Amway conventions!

You show me an Amway convention, I'll show you a cult meeting.

Of course, I say the same about meetings of the Christian Coalition...

It appears we had a somewhat similar young life. To answer your question if you still care more than a year later, you may want to try the forums at www.quixtarblog.com. Amway is now Quixtar in the US.

I went to the summer camp twice in Rockford, MI run by Skip & Sue Ross. If that's the same one you are talking about, send me a PM at that website (my username is 'inheriter') if you want to compare notes.
