Today's update

After all the stresses of this week, I was actually genuinely looking forward to physical therapy today. Hours without phones I'd have to answer! At least 20 minutes of me being able to lie down on a heat pack and do nothing without guilt! And, with luck, a good massage before the requisite torture. (It wouldn't be physical therapy without a little torture.)

Does anyone want to take a guess what happened when I got there? Anyone? Yes, that's right--they couldn't find any evidence of my appointment in their computer, and all the physical therapists were going home early! The guess is that when I canceled my appointment Wednesday, the receptionist wiped out all my appointments at once. So now my next scheduled appointments with them are for early October.

Was very much not ready to ride the bus home, so I went to the nearest shopping mall food court and alternated between reading the book I'd brought with me (Donald A. Norman, Emotional Design) and putting my head down to keep from passing out.

When I was finally ready to deal with the bus, it was late enough that I got to see the sunset en route. A girl complimented me on the T-shirt I'm wearing and said that she really likes designs like this maybe because her mother's a hippie and she (the girl) always has to buy cool shirts before going to events but this shirt kinda reminds her of Guns'N'Roses actually and Axl Rose was sooo hot when he was younger and her mother laughed at her because she was adult in a lot of ways and had adult things like a nose piercing and a tongue piercing and used to have piercings alll up her ears and in her bellybutton (the girl took a breath sometime in here, maybe) and she (the girl) is already sixteen but she still acts like a kid and she refuses to grow up because it's a lot more fun to be like a kid, isn't it? I liked her.

Got home. Before collapsing in bed, I saw there was mail for me from someone at social services, so I've got more phone numbers to try. I'm quite glad of that, while simultaneously being incredibly sick of making phone calls and wishing I could use Morse Code instead. I'd have to learn Morse code first, I'm afraid.

To sum up: Nothing much happened today. But my shortwave radio still works.

I am so sorry about the appointment thing. That really bites. A similar thing happened to me, today, with a doctor's appointment although I wasn't looking much forward to it. So, why is it that you can't lie down for twenty minutes and do nothing without guilt? Don't guilt yourself. This sounds like trite advice but when my life is spinning out of control and when no matter how much effort I put into making it simpler makes a bit of differnece...I lie down and just...breath. Sometimes, it helps.

Well, here at home I can't guarantee that it will be an uninterrupted 20 minutes. There's always the chance that a housemate or the landlord will want to talk to me for some reason, for one thing. Then there's the phone. As badly as I've wanted to unplug the telephone recently, I do want helpful people who are trying to return my calls to be able to do so--and it's impossible to turn off the ringer on this phone. So here at home, I'm likely to feel a tad guilty if I do everything I can to forestall interruptions.

I see. I still think that you should try it, anyway, just once. It might make the next tidal wave of phone calls and unexpected annoyances a bit more tolerable. It's just a thought.

Yes, very annoying. Here's hoping I can get to the appointments next month!

Thanks for the good luck! I'll take all the luck I can get. :-)
