For the record

I am much too kind.

The reason I say this today: Someone who owes me lots of money, when I asked when I could expect said money, told me that they were certain I'd destroyed some of their property (specifically, putting clean clothes which shouldn't have been dried into the dryer) which they claim was worth more than what they owe me. The person never told anyone about this ruination of clothing before, I don't recall this incident (putting clothes in a dryer? as if this doesn't happen every day around here?), and, well, putting other people's clothes in the dryer is pretty much standard procedure in this house on the assumption that any valuable clothes would have been removed from the washer before they got in another housemate's way.

Upon being told this, I said: Since you're sure the incident happened, I'm not sure the incident happened, let's say that you can pay me half of what you owe me rather than the full amount. The person agreed to this plan readily--rather more readily than I would expect from someone who was certain that I owed them more money than they owed me. I think I've been had.

What would you have done?

I'd say take it up with a couple of other roommates and see if they will go guilt her.

What would I have done?

Told them they were so full of shit, I could smell it from 10 feet away and that I wanted my money or perhaps they would prefer that small claims court would give me my money.

For one thing, I don't loan money because, more often than not, you never see it again. I'm more than happy to gift someone with money, because then I never have to expect it back.

You've been had.

I don't loan money because

Wasn't a loan, actually. At least, it wasn't supposed to be: I'm in charge of one of the bills and everyone's supposed to pay me when the bills are due. This person hadn't bothered to pay me in quite some time.

Yeah, I'm thinking I've been had as well.

Heh. I might take it up with the landlord, actually.

::hugs you tight::

I'm sorry sweetie. Well, take what you can get from them, but in the future, if I was you, I'd pass on that job.

Said, "Call Judge fuckin' Judy, then, 'cause I want my money."

Oh honey, that was lame. :(

*hugs*

Well, I don't know what you can do about it...depends on if you want confrontation or not...on the other hand, money is the BIG issue here and I don't think you can afford to be nice right now.
Tell her to give you the money or else!

Hah! I probably should've said something along those lines myself, though I wouldn't use quite those words (I can never remember the names of those TV judges, for one thing).

At this point, if I do anything about it, I'll have to do some work to track the person down--they're now a former housemate and I don't know where they are living. The landlord's likely to have some way to reach her, though, so I may be able to talk things over with him & hear what he thinks. It's to his advantage for me to have the money, after all--the more money I have, the more money I'll be able to pay him.

Yeah, it's probably because you have a day job, or what are those things called? Oh yeah, a life.
